12 Natural Ways to Help Your Child Stop Getting Sick: A Mom & HobbY Herbalist’s Guide

My Child Gets Sick Every Two Weeks. It feels like my child is always sick. If you’ve said this recently, I see you. I’ve been there too – watching my little one battle yet another stuffed nose, missing school again, feeling helpless as the cycle repeats every two weeks. Honestly, it makes my life miserable.

I found myself asking the same desperate questions over and over again: Why is my child always sick? When will this stop? What made our situation even worse was discovering that our child had allergies to several medications. That’s why I became a hobby herbalist out of necessity. I needed to learn simple, yet powerful natural ways to help my child to stop getting sick and truly break the every-two-weeks cycle.

I am sharing today my simple Mom’s Guide to breaking this wicked cycle with the simple strategies that actually worked for us.

When “Always Sick” Became Our Normal

When my child started school, it felt like we were living in a constant state of illness. From the end of August to the end of December, every two weeks he would just get healthy, spend three days at school, and then – boom – sick again.

It finally stopped after I decided to keep him home for the winter months in an online school. He still goes to dancing, climbing, origami class, and sports, but thanks God, everything is good now. You’ve probably been there too.

The main reason behind it is that some parents of sick kids insist their children are “not that sick” and still send them to school. The second reason is that once our child had a course of antibiotics, his immune system became overwhelmed.

The cycle went like this: virus (three weeks), three days at school, bacterial infection (10 days) and antibiotics, three days at school, virus (three weeks) — and so on.

My child caught a cold, then a cough, then a fever. Pediatrician visits became routine, and I found myself asking the same desperate questions: Why is my child always sick? When will this stop?

What made our situation even more challenging was discovering my child had allergies to several medications (including antibiotics). Suddenly, the standard solutions weren’t available to us. That’s when I started learning about natural remedies and figured out that prevention is my best option.

Important Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor, and this is not medical advice. Always consult your pediatrician about your child’s health. What I’m sharing is our personal experience and what worked for our family.

Understanding Why Your Child Gets Sick So Often: When do kids stop getting sick all the time?

This was my burning question. Here’s what I learned from our pediatrician: 6–8 viral infections per year are completely normal for kids in school or daycare. Even her older daughter, who is 12 years old, gets sick. In fact, these illnesses actually help strengthen their immune systems over time. If you want to learn more about whether getting sick really builds your child’s immune system, we did deeper research, and the result might really surprise you.

But if your child is always sick with a fever or seems to catch everything going around, there might be underlying factors weakening their immune system. So, you would definitely need to check with your pediatrician.

What Weakens a Child’s Immune System?

Through my research and personal experience, I found out that there are four factors that are actually bad for all of us.

1. Use of antibiotics

Antibiotics have saved billions of lives, and they are necessary in some cases. But even in those cases, antibiotics disrupt gut health, where 70% of immunity lives. The only way to recover is to eat healthy and support your gut health with real, good food. What really helped us is this gut health food list, made by a scientist and biochemist, who is a blogger. Her blog BeautyBites.org gives great insights and recipes of anti-inflammatory diets and gut health supporting foods.

2. Unhealthy, processed foods

This goes without saying, but processed foods lack essential nutrients for immune function. The only problem is that my kid, like all kids, loves sweets. But sugar is simply a poison. Try to substitute sweets with fruits and smoothies, and you’ve won half the battle.

3. Too much indoor time

Quite some time ago, long before Covid, I watched several ads of Velux, created by a Danish marketing agency called the Indoor Generations. It’s striking that we spend more than 90% of our time indoors, and children and the elderly even more than 95% of their time. This limits not microbial diversity exposure, but also our exposure to fresh air, and that’s the root of all evil.

4. Lack of physical activity

Last but not least, the lack of physical activity significantly reduces circulation and immune cell production.

11 Natural Ways to Help Your Child Stop Getting Sick All the Time

Here’s what transformed our family’s health and broke the every-two-weeks sick cycle:

1. Eat Healthy, Nutrient-Dense Foods

Focus on colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, and lean proteins. I learned that a child’s immune system literally runs on the nutrients they eat. Every deficiency weakens our immune system.

2. Prioritize Sleep

Enough sleep is crucial, because the immune system does its best repair work. Make sure you have a consistent bedtime routine. If your child has difficulties sleeping, there are several natural ways to improve their sleep, including natural remedies for good sleep. That made a huge difference for us.

3. Spend At Least 2 Hours Outdoors Daily

This was our game-changer! Outdoor time boosts not only microbial diversity, which supports immune regulation, but also limits exposure to dust and bad indoor air. The cause of allergies. Rain or shine, we make outdoor play non-negotiable. My kid, by the way uses every excuse to go indoors.

4. Let Them Play and Sweat for At Least One Hour

Active play that gets kids sweating supports lymphatic drainage and immune function. Plus, it’s fun and that supports their immune system too!

5. Change Clothes If They’re Sweaty

Staying in damp, sweaty clothes can chill the body and guess what’s the result: another cold.

6. Dress in Warm, Layered Clothing

Make sure, your kid dresses in proper clothing. Especially during transition seasons, you need to make sure to maintain body temperature well.

7. Always Keep Feet Warm

In many traditional medicine systems, including my grandma’s one’s cold feet are linked to getting sick. Warm socks (natural materials such as wool and cotton) became our secret weapon!

If you notice that your child gets a sniffle, put their feet in a hot bath with coarse sea salt (test that it doesn’t burn the skin) and let them soak for 10-15 minutes. Then dry and put wool socks on.

8. Teach Proper Handwashing

One of the most important things is to teach them proper handwashing. Make it a fun routine – 20 seconds with soap, singing the ABC song, especially before meals and after playing.

I remember how sharing his lunch box with a bunch of classmates turned into scarlet fever, so…Kids don’t think in most cases about hygiene. Make sure, they internalize it. I have a free Germs game printable that you can download and use.

9. Teach Them Not to Touch Their Face

Make sure you teach them not to touch their nose and mouth with dirty hands. The mouth and nose are direct entry points for germs. This habit took time but made a big difference.

10. Teach Social Distance When Someone Coughs

Teach your child to politely step away when someone near them is coughing or sneezing. My child was simply running away, if he noticed someone sick at the playground. And then screaming: “Mom, this kid is sick! Mom!” With the time, it got better.

11. Support with Vitamin C and Vitamin D

After consulting our pediatrician, we added Vitamin D, especially during the winter months when the sunlight is limited.

A fresh-squeezed orange or lemon juice with honey will do their daily dose of Vitamin C, so need for supplements on that one.

How Many Colds a Year Is Too Many?

If your child is always sick since starting school, remember that 6-8 viral infections per year in school is actually normal and could help build immunity. However, if illnesses are severe, and last unusually long, or you notice signs of an immune deficiency, definitely consult your pediatrician.

Our Transformation

Implementing these changes didn’t happen overnight, but within a few months, I noticed our child getting sick every two weeks pattern finally broke.

We still deal with occasional colds, but the recovery time has improved dramatically.

The combination of outdoor time, healthy eating, and simple healthy habits made the biggest impact.

Remember: Every child is different. What worked for us might need adjusting for your family. Always work with your healthcare provider, especially if your child has underlying health conditions or medication allergies like ours.

You’re not alone in this journey, and there is light at the end of the constant-sickness tunnel!
