How Do You Know If It’s Bed Bugs?
What do bed bug bites look like?
We did not meet them personally. We checked the mattress in the AirBnB we stayed at, but we found only shells.
Symptoms and Reactions
Bed bug bites pics online especially from Google lens and Reddit helped – but honestly, everything looks the same after a while.
We considered everything – spiders, mosquitoes, fleas from the mozzarella experience, maybe even an allergy from the mozzarella-making class.
At the end the doctor at the Ostuni clinic, told us, those were bed bug bites.
So, here are some answers to the questions that made us go crazy over a week:

Can bed bug bites cause allergic reactions/blisters/hives?
Yes, all of us had allergic reactions with huge hives. I had even a scary a telltale allergic reaction, that was mixed up with lymphangitis. So, I was prescribed and took orally antibiotics for a week, that did not helped me. Only the antihistamines helped us.
Can bed bug bites cause infection?
Yes, it can, therefore, you need to disinfect the bite site and try not to scratch (which is very difficult thing especially for children). We used cooling camomile compresses, to reduce the itching and disinfect mildly.
Can bed bug bites cause anxiety/insomnia/stress?
Yes, now even few months after this horror, I still think about it. It was just a pure stress and a nightmare, that we could have brought them home and they would hatch out of nowhere.
To Sum Up
Well, bed bug bites – especially if you have a strong allergic reaction, like we did – can look very similar to flea bites, mosquito bites, or even tick bites. We were freaking out. But since all of us (in a three-bedroom house) got bitten in the same manner, it was clearly something we were all exposed to.
In our case, the bites appeared mostly on the neck, belly, and upper arms – not the legs. They were red with one little bite mark, slightly raised, and extremely itchy, three in a line or cluster.
Here’s what we learned:
- Bed bug bites can take usually 24–72 hours to appear.
- They often look like small red dots that get larger or spread out, especially with heat or scratching.
- They appear in a line or a cluster.
- On day two after the bed bug bites appeared, I developed a bite with a red tail – a telltale allergic reaction.
- The itch worsened when sweating or going outside in the summer heat.
So, if you see a line pattern and your bites are starting small, chances are high, that you left the bed bugs bite you.
What Our Bed Bug Bites Looked Like (with Pictures)
People say that bed bug bites show up about a day after being bitten. In our case, it took about three days for the first signs to appear. So, a more accurate timeline might be 24 to 72 hours.
We stayed in the bed bug villa for six nights. For the first three, we had no bites.
Then, we started waking up with new bites every morning – until we left the house. One day after leaving, the bites stopped.
At first, the bites looked like small red dots, but in the heat, the redness spread out around them.
On the second day after the bites appeared, one bite on my belly developed a red tail.
They were very itchy, and we all seemed to be getting them: on the neck, belly, upper arms… but strangely, no bites on the legs.
We tried an antihistamine gel (Fenistil 0.1% Dimetindene Maleate Itching Gel), but it didn’t help much. We also tried cold chamomile compresses overnight. That actually reduced the itching and soothed the skin. We even used cold vinegar cloths, since we read bed bugs hate vinegar. But that didn’t seem to stop the biting.
Whenever we went outside and started sweating, the itchiness and redness came back worse.
By the fifth night, we got really worried when the red tail from one of my bed bug bites kept spreading. The redness spread into a streak. Time to panic (and go to the ER).
Luckily, we went to the emergency room in Ostuni, Apuglia late at night.
The doctor asked where we were sleeping and when we were leaving. She was very helpful, telling us that the bites are almost certainly from pulci da letto (Cimice dei letti), bed bugs. However, because the “red tail” (inflamed streaks) was spreading, she prescribed to me a course of antibiotics for 5 days, thinking the infection might be spreading through the lymph system, to be on the safe side. Usually, they treat the bed bug allergy with an antihistamine, steroid cream and antibiotics cream. Everyone else was told to take antihistamines and, optionally, apply a cortisol cream.
Long story short: after the antibiotics, my bites didn’t improve much. But the antihistamine (Cetirizine) helped a lot after a few days. Though, we did feel really tired from the antihistamines.
How to Treat Bed Bug Bites
We tried:
- Antihistamines (Cetirizine) – worked best, though they made us sleepy.
- Octenisept antiseptic wound cleaning, wound disinfectant spray for sensitive skin
- Antihistamine gel (Fenistil) – not very effective in our case.
- Cold chamomile compresses – surprisingly helpful.
- Vinegar cloths – didn’t seem to help the bites but made us feel proactive.
- Zinc Oxide Cream – seemed to calm the itching
- Aloe Vera Gel (98%) – helped at first, then seemed to burn.

As stated above, the only thing that really helped us were the antihistamines. Cold chamomile compresses and Zinc Oxide Cream soothed the itching at times. Aloe Vera Gel (98%) helped us at first, then seemed to burn and we did not use it anymore.
Home Remedies For Bed Bug Bites
What helped us were cold chamomile compresses, you simply prepare them as a chamomile tea and let them cool down and can store them in the fridge – surprisingly helpful. You can also try cold vinegar cloths that are also mildly disinfecting, if you don’t mind the smell.
When to See a Doctor for Bed Bug Bites?
If your bed bug bites seem to get worse and antihistamines don’t help, don’t wait and visit a doctor. We did it after 3-4 days.
How long do bed bug bites last?
About 2 weeks after the bed bug attack, the bites are almost gone, but we still keep out of the sun, not to get scars. About 4-6 weeks after the bites, they completely faded away. We are all very fair, with sensitive skin and developed an allergy.

How to Make Sure That You Don’t Bring Bed Bugs at Home
We washed everything and left it dry in the sun before we left. Also, we ironed our clothes. Additionally, we used our hair dryer at the highest setting to treat the suitcases.
We packed up and left the villa, terrified the bugs had crawled into our stuff. To be safe, we left all our luggage in the hot car for several hours. The temperature inside hit about 45°C (113°F).
When we got home, we left all the luggage outside and washed our clothes again and put them in the dryer. That took several days. Then we steamed cleaned the luggage.
Important: Heat kills bed bugs and their eggs. A hot car or clothes dryer can help.
And luckily, this seemed to work. 2 Months afterwards, no sign of the bad creatures anymore.

Those red dots with a bullseye pattern are classic tick bites. Ticks carry lime disease. You should get tested right away.
We went to three different doctors, all of them said the same: an allergic reaction to the bed bug bites. It went away with 5 days of antihistamines.

After reading your story, maybe the bite i have is from Bedbug its on my Neck not painful but very itchy specially if am sweating and the weather is hot. But mine is already 8 months now and still have i already been to the doctor and given me different cream but seems nothings work so i end up taking antihisthamine to stop itchy. Our bites got worse (allergy) within 5 days and left marks for about 6-8 weeks. Omg, you had me at “Italy!” I just got back from a 2 week trip and and a two night stay in a hotel between Cinque Terre and Nice, I got eaten alive by something!
