How to Cure a Sore Throat Quickly?
While there’s no instant cure for a sore throat, you can definitely reduce the pain and speed up healing with the right herbal remedies. The key is to reduce inflammation, lower the viral or bacterial load, and soothe the irritated tissues. You should also support your immune system at the same time – so ditch the unhealthy stuff, especially sugar. Here are my quick-to-prepare sore throat remedies to cure a sore throat as quickly as possible:

Use this simple gargle recipe and reduce the viral and bacterial load fast. With it’s antiseptic and antibiotic properties, sage is a fantastic remedy for sore throat. Gargle at least 3 times a day. For kids over 6 who can gargle safely, this works wonders.

Studies show that honey can be as effective as some over-the-counter cough suppressants. For children over two years old, give ½ to 1 teaspoon as needed – just make sure they don’t have any allergies.
4. Ginger, Lemon and Honey

What Drink Soothes a Sore Throat Fast?
If you want to get well quickly, you need to keep yourself or your child hydrated. That’s crucial for healing. Here is what you need to heal:
Herbal Tea with Honey and Lemon
This classic combination isn’t just an old wives’ tale it really works! Warm (not hot) chamomile, thyme, peppermint, or ginger tea with a tablespoon of honey and fresh lemon juice soothes irritation, reduces inflammation, and provides vitamin C to support immune function. Drink as much as possible.
Chicken Soup
This might not surprise you, but warm creamy chicken soup is incredibly soothing for sore throats. It’s packed with minerals and amino acids that support healing, and the warmth provides immediate comfort. Plus, it’s easy to sip even when swallowing hurts.
Cut the Milk
Avoid dairy products during a cold or sore throat, if you can. It can make symptoms worse by producing more mucus. There is also scientific evidence behind it.
Drink Carrot and Apple Juice
Carrot and apple juice is another great way to stay hydrated and to consume the much needed Vitamin C and Vitamin A when you are sick.
Ditch the Unhealthy Stuff
Eat healthy (veggies, fish, soups) when you are sick, because what you eat when you’re sick may determine if you’ll get better.
How Do I Know If My Sore Throat Is Viral or Bacterial?
This is the million-dollar question every parent faces. Here’s what to look for:
Viral Sore Throat (Most Common):

The most common cause of a sore throat, also called pharyngitis, is a viral infection, such as a cold or the flu. It drags for at least week, with younger children at least 2 weeks.
Look for:
- Gradual onset
- Accompanied by runny nose, cough, or congestion
- Mild to moderate pain
- Usually improves within 7-10 days
- Low-grade fever (if any)
Bacterial Sore Throat (Like Strep):
- Sudden, severe throat pain
- High fever (over 101°F)
- Swollen lymph nodes
- White patches on tonsils
- No cough or congestion
- Headache and stomach pain
- White coating on the tongue.

When to See a Doctor
We live in Europe and I usually always see a pediatrician right away if the symptoms appear suddenly and buy a strep throat test from the pharmacy .
If you suspect strep throat (bacterial), see your pediatrician for a strep test. Bacterial infections require antibiotics quickly, while viral sore throats just need supportive care and time.
Also consult your doctor if:
- Sore throat lasts more than a week
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Difficulty opening the mouth
- High fever that doesn’t respond to medication
- Rash appears
The Bottom Line for Moms
Most sore throats are viral and will improve with rest, hydration, and these simple home remedies. The combination of sage, salt water gargles, honey, healthy meals, and rest can work wonders.
As always, if something feels off or your child isn’t improving, don’t hesitate to contact your pediatrician. These natural remedies are wonderful for support and symptom relief, but they’re not a replacement for professional medical advice when it’s needed.
Stay well, and remember – you’ve got this, mama!
